This unit equips learners with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to correctly collect, handle, preserve, prepare, and document samples for analytical chemistry testing. It covers the principles and procedures of representative sampling for solids, liquids, and gases; sample labeling and identification; preservation and storage techniques; prevention of contamination; sample preparation methods such as drying, crushing, grinding, sieving, dissolution, filtration, digestion, dilution, and homogenization. Learners will also develop competence in the safe use of laboratory equipment, application of quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) procedures, adherence to laboratory safety regulations, and proper documentation using chain-of-custody and laboratory records. Upon successful completion of this unit, learners will be able to collect and prepare analytical samples that are suitable for accurate, reliable, and reproducible laboratory analysis in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and industry best practices.
